Course Overview

As part of KAAF’s mission to provide quality and comprehensive general tertiary education and also to equip its students with cutting-edge academic and professional training, the BSc Information Technology programme seeks to provide students who will acquire theoretical and practical competencies/skills in the development and deployment of technology in organization with specialization in Network and Telecommunications; Information and Cyber security; Data Science; Artificial Intelligence; Web development and multimedia; Database Technology and Programming; and Business IT/E-Business. It also endeavors to developed entrepreneurship, leadership, and material skills so as to enable its graduates to take up positions in areas relating to Information technology.

 

Information Technology is one of the key areas of study which has the potential of enhancing the performance of other sectors of the economy for accelerated development. The impact of computers and information technologies on the economic, social, cultural, and other sectors of the economy is very vital.

There is an increasing demand for System Analysts, System Administrators, Computer Network Engineers, Network System Administrators, Database Managers, Data Scientists, System Audit Specialists, AI Experts, Web Developers, Network Programmers, Network Technicians, Cyber Security Specialists and Software Developers to meet current trends in the world.

Ghana as a nation can take advantage of Information Technology to develop its economy. The personnel in the computer industry must have a wider range of theoretical concepts and technical knowledge and skills in computing. Equally important are the practical hands-on sessions to boost the technical know-how of the graduates. This course has not deviated from Ghana’s educational system which has emphasized on either the acquisition of theoretical knowledge or development of practical skills.

 

The syllabus is designed to produce technically competent graduates to meet National manpower needs in Information Technology.  Specifically, the course is expected to:

  1. Provide technical training to enable students acquire essential skills and knowledge in Information Technology
  2. Equip graduates with both, the theoretical & practical knowledge and competence needed to work as Information Technology professionals with skills in specific areas relating to Information Technology
  3. Enable students have a broad knowledge in Information Technology and a substantial knowledge in at least one key area in Information Technology (computer network management and computer security management
  4. Enable students to be an independent thinker and also be capable of developing a professional career in Information Technology
  5. Make students acquire new knowledge (continue learning throughout a graduate’s professional career)
  6. Equip graduates with the methodical approach to identifying and fixing problems in Information Technology with the appropriate troubleshooting tools and/or development of computer software systems
  7. Enable graduate to identify and analyze legal, social, and ethical issues in computing and information technology and their impacts on professional behaviour and actions

 

After completion, the graduates can take careers in any of the following:

System Analysts, System Administrators, Computer Network Engineers, Network System Administrators, Database Managers, Data Scientists, System Audit Specialists, AI Experts, Web Developers, Network Programmers, Network Technicians, Cyber Security Specialists and Software Developers.

Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE), West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), and Technical Exams Unit

The general requirements for admission of WASSCE and SSSCE candidates to first degree programmes are three (3) credit passes in three core subjects and three (3) credit passes in three relevant elective subjects.

  1. SSSCE Candidates: Credit Passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three core subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, plus any three (3) elective subjects.
  2. WASSCE Candidates: Credit Passes (A1-C6) in six subjects comprising three core subjects, including, English Language and Mathematics, plus any three (3) elective subjects.
  3. Technical Exams Unit: Credit Passes (Distinction to Pass) in six subjects comprising three core subjects, including, English Language and Mathematics, plus any three (3) elective subjects.

General Certificate of Education (GCE) Candidates

Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better. Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an Arts subject (for Science students).

Admission of Higher National Diploma (HND) Candidates to First Degree Programmes

Applicants must have graduated with a good HND certificate in Computer Science, Electrical and Electronics, Computer Network Management, Business Studies, Information and Communication Technology or other cognate program will be placed in Level Three Hundred (level 300).
